Designed by Gilling Dod Architects and operated by Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust the 14-bedded unit in Whittingham, Preston benefits from specialist furniture for challenging environments, supplied throughout by Teal Lifecare.
The furniture choice reflects current best practice in mental health furniture design, helping to create safe and appropriate spaces, while helping staff to deliver patient centred care that places the service user at the heart of the process.
With its robust, secure construction, the furniture features ligature-resistant design and additional weighting to help maximise safety and limit misuse, helping in the delivery of care and the mental health and emotional wellbeing needs of those with a Learning Disability.
Working closely with clinicians from the Trust, experts through experience and service users Teal were able to tailor the furniture design, recognising the uniqueness of all service users with a Learning Disability. Marli soft seating for example is appropriate for Learning Disabilities - with its wide, reassuringly supportive base and quilted back detail helping to create a softer and familiar homely aesthetic. All furniture is carefully positioned to take full advantage of the views over the landscape and its natural green surroundings.
Durable and wipe clean healthcare appropriate fabrics and finishes were used throughout, with a soft colour palette set against a warm neutral backdrop, helping to create a relaxing and informal atmosphere.
From the furniture within the stylish and welcoming entrance, with its timber clad finishes, to more specialist communal, sensory, bedroom and dining spaces Teal helped create uplifting and safe spaces with a familiar appeal.
