Consolidating services from across the city of Liverpool, a new inpatient unit has been built on the site of the old Mossley Hill Hospital, raising the standard of mental health care in the city and the wider Greater Merseyside region.
Commissioned by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust the modern, new, state-of-the-art mental health facility marks the end of traditional shared dormitory wards in the city, with single bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms to promote privacy and dignity.
Delivered by Graham Construction the new 80-bed facility features specialist mental health furniture supplied by Teal Lifecare and represents a step-change in the provision of mental health in the region.
Teal’s contemporary styled furniture was selected throughout in the open plan communal spaces, family visiting, reception, bedroom and therapy areas, with anti-ligature features to prevent self-harm, upholstered in a selection of co-ordinating fabric effect vinyl’s to create a non-clinical aesthetic.
Communal spaces benefit from furniture with additional weighting to maximise safety and limit misuse, while helping to support both the specialist staff in the delivery of care and the safety and wellbeing of patients.
Designed in partnership with clinicians and service users who helped choose the colour schemes, the new facility is flooded with therapeutic light. The modern, airy design of the building created by architects Gilling Dod is enhanced by the specialist furniture, helping to create spaces that promote recovery and aid wellbeing.
Mossley Hill Hospital follows Teal’s involvement in similar projects with Mersey Care, including Aspen Wood, a new 40-bed specialist learning disability unit and Rowan View Hospital medium secure unit, providing outstanding care for patients with mental health and learning disabilities on the Maghull Health Park on Merseyside.
