A beacon of mental health care in the heart of North London, Highgate East is a brand-new flagship inpatient facility that is part of the transformation programme to improve impatient and community facilities for service users in Camden and Islington.
The newly constructed £80 million mental health hospital, delivered by Bam Construction on behalf of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust marks a sea change away from more traditional institutional settings. The 78-bed facility replaces the ageing inpatient wards at St Pancras Hospital and provides an environment that supports the recovery of service users, helping to reduce recovery times through respectful, person-centred care. Highgate East truly represents the future of mental health care in the capital.
Designed in partnership with clinicians and service users with lived experience of mental health services Highgate East is a world-class facility able to deliver a wide range of therapies and support in uplifting interiors with natural light and space providing an aid to wellbeing and recovery, while delivering a valuable community asset with a café and gym open to the public.
Teal’s contemporary styled furniture was selected throughout in the open plan communal spaces, dining, bedroom and therapy areas, with anti-ligature features to prevent self-harm, upholstered in a selection of co-ordinating fabric effect vinyl’s to create a non-clinical aesthetic.
Communal spaces benefit from furniture with additional weighting to maximise safety and limit misuse, while helping to support both the specialist staff in the delivery of care and the safety and wellbeing of inpatients.
Bespoke joinery solutions were also provided for the TV storage in finishes to complement the doors, flooring and other elements.
